What is GAP Insurance?

If your car is written off or stolen, your motor insurer will usually only pay its market value at the time of the incident. Cars lose value quickly, so this is often far less than you paid – or still owe on finance.

GAP Insurance bridges that shortfall. It tops up the difference between your insurer’s payout and your car’s original invoice price or outstanding finance, so you can settle what you owe and get back on the road.

  • Theft
  • Accidental damage
  • Fire damage
  • Flood & water damage

How the gap appears

Your insurer pays (market value)€22,500

What if your car was stolen?

If your car is stolen and not recovered, your insurer will usually only pay its market value on the day – not what you paid for it, or what you still owe on finance.

60%Some cars can lose up to 60% of their value in the first three years.

AA GAP Insurance covers theft as well as write-offs from accidents, fire and flood, so a stolen car doesn’t leave you paying for something you no longer have.

GAP Insurance FAQs

What’s the difference between GAP and motor insurance?
Your motor insurance pays the market value of your car if it’s written off or stolen. GAP Insurance works alongside it, covering the difference between that payout and what you paid for the car or still owe on finance.
Why might there be an insurance shortfall?
Most cars lose a large share of their value in the first few years. If your car is written off, the market value your insurer pays can be thousands less than the purchase price or the finance balance outstanding.
Do I need GAP Insurance if my car is on finance?
It isn’t compulsory, but it’s worth considering. Without it, you could be left repaying a finance agreement on a car you no longer have.
Is GAP Insurance a legal requirement?
No. GAP Insurance is optional cover and you don’t have to buy it from the dealer or finance provider who sold you the car.
When can I buy GAP Insurance?
You can buy cover up to 180 days after you purchase your car. [Confirm eligibility window for AA Ireland.]
How much does GAP Insurance pay out?
It depends on the cover you choose and the maximum benefit limit on your policy. Enter your reg above to see the options and limits available for your car.
Are there any exclusions?
Yes. For example, a claim may not be paid if you didn’t have comprehensive motor insurance, your insurer didn’t declare the car a total loss, or the car was used for racing or off-road events. See the policy documents for the full list.
